I remember Sunday Pets being one of the first reviews I wrote on this website, way over a decade ago. It was good then, and it’s good now – but why?
Consider kibble as hard processed nuggets, often high in carbohydrates from grain which aren’t optimal for your dog. Now compare that with Sunday Pets dog food, made mostly from meat and organs which are far better for your pet carnivore, combined with veggies and choice ingredients which should truly benefit your dog.
Not only are the ingredients better than most kibbles, Sunday Pets is also cooked at much lower temperatures to kibble, and we know high temperatures kill nutrients, don’t we?
However, according to the ingredients it seems less than two thirds is animal based, and over one third vegetables. Although that may be better than most kibbles, compared to most on the best dog food list it has to be said you can still do better.
Let’s take a good look at Sunday Pets dog food, and if it works for you, your budget, and your dog, then great!
Sunday Pets Review
What the marketing says
There’s a lot of good stuff to say about the marketing of Sunday Pets dog food, and I’m happy to say it rings true.
New Zealand pet foods always come with an air of quality which is unsurprising given the pristine environment and ethical farming practices.
In the Sunday Pets dog foods you find free range meats and sustainably-farmed fish, and that should matter to you if you want to feed your dog a high quality pet food.
The packaging states minimally processed, which is what you want, and what I love the most – low carb high protein. I see dogs as primarily carnivores, not far different in biology to carnivorous cats, so an emphasis on high quality protein should be right at the top of your checklist when choosing a dog food.
What the ingredients really say
Here’s a challenge for you – go to your local Coles or Woolies and find me a dog food which lists the percentages of each ingredient.
I bet you can’t!
The reason is most pet food manufacturers don’t want you to know the truth, and even if meat is listed as the first ingredient it often comes with a stack of non-meat ingredients which make it way more plant-based than meat-based.
I love how Sunday Pets are more honest, and we find 64% of the Sunday Pets New Zealand Beef Recipe is grass-fed beef (meat, tripe, liver, kidney, and heart) combined with 34.9% vegetables (pumpkin, flaxseed, carrot, and organic giant kelp).
Doesn’t that give us a really clear picture of what we’ll be feeding our dogs?
I find those ingredients really good, and although other premium brands have more meat and less vegetables, this is still reems better than pretty much every kibble you can find. Far better, and far healthier for your dog as well.
It’s nice to see green-lipped mussel, blueberries, and manuka honey as well. Yes, they’re in very small amounts, but when fed daily should benefit your dog. These wonderful ingredients take little explanation of how healthy they are, and I wish more dog foods had ingredients such as this..
All in all, Sunday Pets is a very good option for your dog.
If you’re currently feeding kibble, take a look at the ingredients and you’ll see why Sunday Pets is so much better.
